This important safety feature helps drivers exit their vehicle safely by detecting when a car, cyclist or pedestrian is approaching from the rear. When an object is detected, the blind spot monitor illuminates and alerts the driver via a warning. If the car has E-Latch, passengers won’t be able to open the door until the area is clear. This safety system helps drivers, and their passengers avoid collision with oncoming objects and helps them exit the vehicle safely. Safe Exit Assist is operational when the car is parked, and the engine is running. It also operates for up to three minutes after the engine is turned off, which is great for those who like to take some time before exiting.

Some Lexus cars are equipped with an innovative E-Latch system that allows drivers to access the vehicle easily and seamlessly. An E-Latch door is unlocked via a gentle touch of the handle. From the inside, an E-Latch door opens in one smooth motion with the press of a release button and a push. When Safe Exit Assist has detected an object, E-Latch does not engage, and the doors cannot open.
